What it is

Epithalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) derived from epithalamin, a natural substance produced by the pineal gland. It was developed by Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, where it has been studied since the 1980s.

The primary research interest centers on its ability to activate telomerase — the enzyme that extends telomeres — in human somatic cells. Telomere shortening is associated with cellular aging, making telomerase activation a significant area of longevity research.

What research shows

  • Activation of telomerase and telomere elongation in human fetal cell cultures
  • Extended lifespan in animal models (fruit flies and mice)
  • Melatonin regulation — pineal gland support and circadian rhythm normalization
  • Some human data from Russian longitudinal studies showing reduced mortality in elderly populations
  • Antioxidant effects and normalization of neuroendocrine function

What remains unknown

  • Western clinical trial validation — most research is Russian and not independently replicated
  • Optimal dosing and cycling protocols
  • Long-term safety with chronic use
  • Whether telomerase activation from epithalon translates to meaningful longevity benefit in already-healthy adults

Administration basics

Common use cases

Longevity protocols, anti-aging, sleep and circadian rhythm support.

Half-life

Very short — typically administered in cycles.

Administration

Subcutaneous injection or intranasal. Typically run in 10-day cycles.

Research Protocols & Common Usage

Doses used in research

  • Khavinson research has used 5–10mg per injection
  • Community protocols commonly report 5–10mg/day for a defined course

Administration routes studied

Subcutaneous injectionIntranasal

Typical protocol duration

Research and community protocols commonly use 10–20 day courses, repeated 1–2 times per year.

Common stacking protocols

  • Epithalon + Pinealon — commonly combined in Russian peptide bioregulator longevity protocols
  • Epithalon + Thymalin — combined for immune and longevity support
  • Epithalon + GHK-Cu — combined in some anti-aging protocols

Contraindications & combinations to avoid

  • Hormone-sensitive conditions — Epithalon influences the pineal gland and melatonin production
  • Active cancer — telomerase activation theoretically could affect cancer cell biology; consult an oncologist
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding — no safety data available

Dosing information reflects doses used in published research and commonly reported community protocols only. This is not a personal recommendation. These compounds are not FDA-approved for human use in the contexts described. Consult a qualified healthcare provider before starting any protocol.
